10 ways to get over the ‘Fall Is Coming’ blues
I am looking forward to the coming Fall season! You might ask, “How can anyone be looking forward to cold weather?” I will admit that in the past I would dread the change of colour that heralded the coming blight of winter and its accompanying loss of foliage, but now I relish the seasons. Here are the Roaming Gallivant’s 10 sure fire concepts to beat the fall blues.
1. Reacquaint yourself with your winter wardrobe.
I had the pleasure of opening the coat closet this morning as I prepared to go out. “Hello there Prada leather! Why hey there biker jacket. How are you Ferragamo P-Coat? Ive certainly missed you, vintage brown corduroy coat with torn lining!” These are just some of the many exclamations I made whilst rifling through our coats. I was excited by all the looks I could revive or pair with clothing acquired over the summer. I won’t even mention the scarf box in the back corner.
2. Boots.
I love to wear boots – and shoes, I don’t like at all.
-Reba McEntire
Although I can’t resist boots in the summer, I wear them constantly during the cooler months. I love having my ankles warm and protected from cold drafts and snow alike. To me boots are the quintessential winter footwear. So go to your closet and pull out all of your boots and give them a good polish.
The man with the boots does not mind where he places his foot.
-Irish Proverb
3. Winter cooking.
While summer is the providence of BBQ, winter is the court of casseroles. I suggest you get out your family cookbook or perhaps the joy of cooking, and turn to the casserole section. Not only are casseroles a wonderful treat they warm the house. No one wants to bake during the summer for the simple reason that 2 hours at 375 degrees will wilt even the hardiest chef in the dog days of summer. We suggest WINTER VEGETABLES MORNAY as our favorite fall recipe. Here is a Spotify playlist for while you are cooking: Runsible Honour
4. Fire!
Smoke ’em if you got ’em. The lovely scent of hickory smoke scents the evening air and reminds us it’s time to stoke the fire.
I can envision a small cottage somewhere, with a lot of writing paper, and a dog, and a fireplace and maybe enough money to give myself some Irish coffee now and then and entertain my two friends.
-Lt Richard Van de Geer
5. Be as cold or warm as you like.
In hot weather, I can remove only so many clothes before first drawing attention and finally being arrested for public indecency. In Cold weather, I may put on as many clothes are as necessary to be warm and cozy.
Mostly we chose this Sunday because it’s cool. A kilt is not a warm-weather item of clothing.
-John Earl
6. Think about No humidity.
Other concerns are snakes and bugs, … It’s 92 degrees with 100 percent humidity. They are praying for no rain for a while.
-Dennis Richards
As thick as pea soup, the air seemed to smite me. I struggle to swim through the stuff, it makes me feel wet and logy. The sticky, sweaty, feeling of a poplin shirt trying to slide over your damp salty back. Climbing into a damp set of sheets. The cold comfort of Air conditioning may feel like a boon when confronted with 90 percent humidity and 90 degrees of sweltering sauna like weather, but it really isn’t the same as nice crisp fall air and your favorite Parka or heirloom camel hair cloak.
That was summer, now imagine putting a pot on the stove to steam up the air of your dry house in a deep winter blizzard. Pure joy as your chapped sinuses relax and take in the sweet moist air.
7. Winter walks.
You don’t hear a sound in the world. There’s nothing quite like a walk in the morning with a new snow. The world seems so pure, so beautiful.
-Jeffrey Greene
Fresh snow is falling, powdery and silent. A soft granular susurration is all you can hear. Some of the best walks happen in a light snow storm. The beautiful clean white powder lays all around and covers the world like a down blanket, the world seems tucked in and dozing.
Just as they walked past (the pile), the snow slid. It didn’t fall on (Sebastian) — it pushed him like a wave.
-Sandy Phillips
8. Warming your hands with a hot mug.
I wrap my chill fingers around a steaming mug of X, and close my eyes and pleasure. If I were a cat, I would be purring. We suggest that after a nice winter walk or a bout with axe splitting wood, you come inside and heat up a pan of milk. Add a heap of unsweetened coco, a splash of honey, and a pinch of salt. Don’t boil it over, watch until it just starts to steam and then pour into your favorite mug, which you preheated with hot water. Next add a dash of Gran Marnier, and wrap your cold fingers around the delicious warmth.
The fireplace is an appropriate element in any room. Imagine relaxing by the fire, reading the paper with a cup of hot chocolate in your bedroom. It’s very sensory.
-Gary Lewis
9. Being cozy in your house during bad weather.
The wind is whistling through the eaves, but I feel cozy and safe. In a storm, there are no emergencies that trump a bad snowstorm. I know I am safe in my warm house. Nothing left but to cook for a lazy brunch or maybe start thinking about dinner.
10. Sleeping with lots of blankets.
The more the merrier. Blanket upon blanket. The weight of them smothers me in a warm cocoon. Turn down the heat or crack a window and sleep in a crispy room with your friendly, cozy, warm blankets.

The winter blues, ahhhh, how I loath them. That said, there is one thing I do look forward to during suicide watch and that is wearing all my cool coats. I require and entire closet for these alone. For me, a great coat (and scarf) coupled with the right pair of shoes can really make me shout, “I AM A SEXY BEAST!” I love hats too but I have a habit of leaving them at friends houses when I visit them.
